LIUNA Chat is a confidential communication platform operated by the New York State Laborers' Health & Safety Fund on behalf of LIUNA Upstate New York. It exists for one purpose: to give construction and solar workers a safe, private way to connect with a union organizer — without fear of employer retaliation. This policy explains what information we collect, how we protect it, and what we will never do with it.
When you complete the intake form, you may provide: a name or nickname (optional — you may remain anonymous), your home county, a preferred contact method and, if you choose, a phone number or email address, your trade, employer, and job site location, and a description of the workplace issues you are facing. We also collect messages you send within the secure chat. We do not collect device identifiers, browsing history, or location data beyond what you voluntarily provide.
We use your information to connect you with a LIUNA union organizer who can assist you, to follow up through your chosen contact method if you provided one, to operate and maintain the secure chat platform, and to comply with legal obligations. We do not use your information for advertising, marketing to unrelated third parties, or any purpose unrelated to union organizing support.
Your submission and all messages are accessible only to authorized LIUNA organizers and staff. We will never share, sell, disclose, or otherwise transfer your information to your employer, contractor, job site management, or any person or entity that could use it against you. Period.
All personal information submitted through the intake form is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM encryption. Each chat session is protected by a unique, cryptographically random access token. Messages are encrypted before storage. Access to worker submissions is strictly limited to authorized organizers and administrators. No security system is infallible, but we take these protections seriously because your safety depends on them.
Submissions and associated messages that have been inactive for 90 or more days are automatically and permanently deleted from our system. You may also request immediate deletion of all your data at any time by using the "Delete My Data" option within the secure chat. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
If you provide a phone number and consent to text messages, we may contact you through that number to follow up on your inquiry. Your phone number will only be used to communicate with you as part of this organizing support service. We will not share it with third parties for marketing purposes. To stop receiving text messages at any time, reply STOP to any message you receive. You may also delete your data entirely through the "Delete My Data" feature in the chat.
WE DO NOT SELL, RENT, LOAN, TRADE, OR OTHERWISE TRANSFER YOUR PHONE NUMBER OR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANY THIRD PARTY FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES.
This platform is intended for adult workers and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have done so, we will delete it promptly.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted to this page. Continued use of LIUNA Chat after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. This policy applies solely to the LIUNA Chat platform and does not govern any other programs or services offered by LIUNA.
